托马斯格雷是英国十八世纪著名诗人、学者，新古典主义后期“墓畔派”的代表人物。他出生在伦敦的一个经纪人家庭，年青时曾在伊顿公学和剑桥大学求学，一生的大部分时间在剑桥大学从事教学与研究工作。他不求声名，曾拒绝“桂冠诗人”的称号。诗作不多，仅十余首传世，其中以《墓园挽歌》最为著名，是十八世纪后期感伤主义诗歌的经典之作。
《墓园挽歌》的创作长达八年之久，最初是为了哀悼格雷在伊顿公学读书时的好友里查德韦斯特。但是纵观全诗，显然已超越了对某个具体人物的哀思，而是诗人思考并领悟人生的真切慨叹，表现出超然豁达的生死观和淡泊名利的人生态度 。1751年诗歌一经发表，即大获赞誉，被认为是“英国十八世纪诗歌的压卷作”，甚至是“全部英诗中的第一杰作”。
全诗共32小节、128行，语言精致典雅，结构严谨完整，五音步抑扬格诗体运用得娴熟考究，读来音韵和谐，回味无穷，无论当年还是现在都堪称为完美的诗作。
